It all started when every letter that David Horvath sent to Sun-Min Kim (they were dating) had a little cartoon of his character Wage at the bottom of the letter saying "I miss You and love you" next to it. As a surprise gift Sun-Min sewed a doll of Wage, and sent it to David in the mail. David showed Wage to an agent and wrote to Sun Min asking her to sew more, and Uglydolls started.
Uglydolls were first released in 2002, and are distinguished by an aesthetic that balances traditional cuteness with perceived ugliness. In 2006, Uglydolls were awarded the Specialty Toy of the Year award by the Toy Industry of America.
